The Process
Counselling is a relationship between two or more persons in which the counsellor seeks to assist clients to deal more effectively with the problems of life.
Counselling involves a discussion with a trained professional which can help people to:
- Identify those circumstances, thoughts and actions in their life which are causing, or contributing to, concern and unhappiness.
- Develop strategies to help them come to terms with, and (where possible) resolve, those issues or concerns; and
- Cope or deal with those issues and circumstances in a constructive and positive way.
Counselling is an interactive process which relies on the person concerned to be motivated to seek help, to be open to the possibility of change and prepared to take part in small tasks that may help to bring about a positive outcome.
